The power of acupuncture for stress relief

At Village Remedies acupuncture and Chinese herbal clinic in Balmain, Sydney, we talk about stress in a particular way. Typically when we hear the word stress, we associate it with ideas of being overwhelmed or burnt out, but this extreme doesn’t cover the full spectrum of stress that we encounter on a daily basis.

When Hans Selye originally coined the term “stress” back in 1936, his definition was “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”. Another way to think about it is as a load that forces your body to step up and adapt. For example: waking up early for work before you’ve had enough sleep is a stress on the system; travelling in peak hour traffic is a stress on the system; running after the kids is a stress on the system; eating lunch on the go is a stress on the system; etc, etc.

It’s important to remember stress isn’t always bad, however, for example exercise is a great example of a good stress that causes healthy adaptations (when done right with the right amount of recovery). It’s only when the stressors, or amount of load builds up and continues for an extended period, without the necessary “de-load” or “de-stress” time.

This is the kind of definition we use when talking about stress at Village Remedies. There’s nothing wrong with being busy, but we do want to make sure we’re helping you offset the amount of load or stress coming in from life, to help keep you feeling strong, happy and healthy.

At Village Remedies clinic in Balmain, Sydney, we use traditional acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to help offset stress and relieve stress related symptoms. Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific areas of the body to trigger a therapeutic response. This technique influences the body’s biological processes to address the root causes of various health conditions. By targeting these precise points, we stimulate nerves and tissues to promote healing and provide relief.

What is stress management?

Stress management refers to various techniques and therapies designed to help reduce the physical and emotional effects of stress. It can include practices such as:

  • Relaxation techniques — Methods like deep breathing, acupuncture, meditation, yoga and tai chi help calm the mind and relax the body.
  • Physical activity — Regular exercise, such as walking, running or swimming, can reduce stress hormones and trigger the release of endorphins, which improve mood.
  • Healthy lifestyle choices — Eating a balanced diet and getting sufficient sleep are crucial for allowing the body to rest and lowering stress levels.

How does acupuncture help with stress?

Acupuncture helps manage stress by stimulating specific points in the body, which promotes the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. It also regulates the autonomic nervous system, reducing physical symptoms of stress and promoting relaxation. Additionally, acupuncture can improve sleep quality and alleviate symptoms related to anxiety, contributing to overall stress reduction.

Is acupuncture for stress relief painful?

Acupuncture treatments are generally not painful. The needles used are very thin, and most people feel little to no discomfort when they are inserted. Some may experience a mild tingling or warmth at the insertion points. The overall experience is typically relaxing, and many patients feel a sense of calm and well-being during and after the session.

Are the practitioners at Village Remedies qualified?

Absolutely! Our team boasts over twenty years of combined experience in treating various health conditions. Each of our practitioners is trained and certified in Chinese medicine and acupuncture, ensuring you receive safe and personalized care.

Are there any side effects of acupuncture?

Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a qualified practitioner. Most people experience minimal side effects, which can include slight bruising, minor bleeding at needle sites or temporary soreness.

How many sessions will I need to see results?

It depends on each patient’s specific health condition. During your initial consultation, we will assess your needs and provide an estimate of the required sessions for optimal results.
